Monitors

What is it?

  • A computer monitor is an output device which displays information in pictorial form and text.

  • A monitor is made up of circuitry, a screen, a power supply, buttons to adjust screen settings, and casing that holds all of these components.

  • A monitor is only used to display (output) information from a computer and provides no source of input. For this reason, a computer monitor is considered an output device.

Types of Monitor Connections:

  • Computer monitors have at least one of the following types of monitor connectors to connect to a computer.

  • DVI

  • HDMI

  • VGA

Types of Monitors:

  • There are many ways to classify monitors.

In terms of color capabilities.

3 Types

Monochrome

Gray-Scale

Color Monitor

  • Capable of displaying different shades of gray.

  • Can display anywhere from 16 to over 1 million different colors.

  • Called RGB monitors.

  • black and white

  • green and black

  • amber and black

  • In terms of technology, there are 2-types of monitors.

  • CRT Monitor

  • Flat Panel Monitors

CRT (Cathod Ray Tube):

  • The CRT monitor looks like a television and is used with a non-portable computer system.

Flat Panel Monitor :

  • It is thinner and lighter, and commonly used with a portable computer system.

  • LCD (Liquid crystal display): A flat electronic visual display that makes use of the light modulating properties of liquid crystals.

  • LED (Light emitting diode): A semiconductor light source as a backlight of LCD.

  • OLED (Organic light emitting diode): Is a light-emitting diode (LED) in which the emissive electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compound that emits light in response to an electric current.

Performance of a Monitor:

The performance of a monitor is measured by the following parameters:

  • Aspect ratio: The ratio of the horizontal length to the vertical length. Monitors usually have the aspect ratio 4:3, 5:4, 16:10  or 16:9.

  • Resolution: Is the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed.

  • Power consumption: Is measured in watts.

  • Viewing angle: is the maximum angle at which images on the monitor can be viewed, without excessive degradation to the image. It is measured in degrees horizontally and vertically.

  • For LCD - 30 degree

  • For LED - 90 degree
